There is something special about exploring your own backyard.
The United States is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking national parks, fascinating historic sites, charming coastal towns, vibrant cities, and one of a kind experiences. You can stand where history was made in Philadelphia, watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon, stroll through streets filled with live jazz in New Orleans, or spend the day at the Happiest Place on Earth. From coast to coast, these unforgettable destinations belong on every travel lover’s bucket list.
In honor of the 250th Independence Day, I thought it would be fun to celebrate the incredible places that make America so unique.
Welcome to The ABCs of America’s Must See Places.
This isn’t just a list of destinations. It’s a collection of experiences, landmarks, neighborhoods, scenic drives, and bucket list adventures that showcase the beauty and diversity of our country. Some I’ve been fortunate enough to experience myself (all photos are from my own travels), while others are still waiting on my own travel wish list.
How many have you checked off?
A is for Alaska
Few places make you feel as small, and as inspired, as Alaska. Towering glaciers, snow covered mountains, abundant wildlife, and charming coastal towns create a destination unlike anywhere else in the United States.
One of the best ways to experience Alaska is by cruise, allowing you to wake up each morning to a completely different breathtaking view.
Can’t miss: Watching glaciers calve into the ocean while keeping an eye out for whales, sea otters, and bald eagles.
Travel Advisor Tip: If Alaska is on your bucket list, plan early. The best itineraries, staterooms and excursions often book well in advance. For a full experience, combine a cruise with a land tour.
B is for Boston, Massachusetts

History comes alive in Boston.
Whether you’re walking the Freedom Trail, cheering on the Red Sox, or enjoying fresh seafood along the waterfront, Boston blends centuries of history with the energy of a modern city.
It is one of the most walkable cities in the country, making it easy to experience without constantly needing transportation.
Can’t miss: Walking the Freedom Trail from beginning to end.
Travel Advisor Tip: Combine Boston with Salem, Plymouth and even Cape Cod for a complete feel of Massachusetts.
C is for Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston feels like stepping into a postcard.
Cobblestone streets, colorful homes, Spanish moss, incredible restaurants, and Southern hospitality make this one of the most charming cities in America.
Take your time here. Charleston isn’t meant to be rushed.
Can’t miss: A leisurely walk along Rainbow Row before dinner on the waterfront.
D is for Disneyland, California
The original Disney park opened in 1955 and forever changed family vacations.
There is something nostalgic about walking down Main Street, U.S.A., knowing Walt Disney himself dreamed up this magical place. While many people compare Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I truly believe each offers a completely different experience.

Disneyland may be smaller, but its history and charm make it incredibly special.
Can’t miss: Experiencing classic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean and ending the evening with a nighttime spectacular.
Travel Advisor Tip: The Disneyland Resort in California consists of Disneyland Park and California Adventure Park. They are right across from each other, which makes a park hopper ticket invaluable here.
E is for Everglades National Park, Florida
The Everglades are unlike any landscape you’ll find elsewhere in the country.
This remarkable ecosystem is home to alligators, manatees, countless bird species, and winding waterways that seem to stretch forever.
Can’t miss: An airboat ride through the marshes.
F is for the French Quarter, Louisiana

There is simply no place quite like the French Quarter.
The music spills into the streets, historic balconies overflow with flowers, and every corner offers another unforgettable meal.
Whether you’re visiting during Mardi Gras or on a quieter weekday afternoon, the French Quarter has an energy all its own.
Can’t miss: Listening to live jazz while enjoying beignets and café au lait.
Travel Advisor Tip: New Orleans is a unique city with French, Spanish, Native American, African and Caribbean influences. With this melting pot of cultures, there's a lot more than Bourbon Street to explore. Affiliate link for Bayou boat tours, plantation tours, ghost tours and more.
G is for Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Photos simply cannot capture the scale of the Grand Canyon.

Standing along the rim reminds you just how incredible nature can be. Every changing shadow creates an entirely new view.
Can’t miss: Watching sunrise or sunset from the South Rim.
Travel Advisor Tip: The West Rim is where the famous Skywalk is. Book tickets in advance for the Skywalk.
H is for Hawaii
Each Hawaiian island offers something different.
Some travelers come for adventure, others for luxury, and many simply come to slow down and reconnect.
No matter which island you choose, you’ll discover breathtaking scenery and warm aloha spirit.
Can’t miss: Watching the sun disappear into the Pacific after attending a traditional luau.
Travel Advisor Tip: Consider Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America as an interesting way to experience several of Hawaii's islands in one trip.
I is for Independence Hall, Pennsylvania
Few buildings have shaped history more than Independence Hall.
This is where both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and signed.

Standing inside the room where our nation’s story began is a powerful experience.
Can’t miss: Pair your visit with the nearby Liberty Bell.
Travel Advisor Tip: Philadelphia is a great city to explore. Besides being steeped in America's history, the city also has numerous locations you might recognize from movies like Rocky (you won't be the only one running up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art for a photo op, I'm sure), The Sixth Sense and Philadelphia. And foodies rejoice! Pat's King of Steaks or Geno's Steaks? Try them both and pick your favorite Philly cheesesteak. Reading Terminal Market is another must try spot for a wide variety of food options.
J is for Joshua Tree National Park, California
Joshua Tree feels almost otherworldly.
Its twisted trees, giant boulders, and star filled skies create a landscape unlike anywhere else in America. Whether you’re hiking, rock climbing, or simply enjoying the quiet, this park has a way of making you slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.
Can’t miss: Stay after sunset. Joshua Tree is one of the best places in the country for stargazing.
K is for Kennebunkport, Maine
Classic New England charm is everywhere in Kennebunkport.
Fresh lobster, quaint shops, rocky coastline, and ocean breezes make it the perfect coastal escape.

Can’t miss: Stroll through Dock Square and enjoy a traditional lobster roll. Enjoy a whale watching tour.
Travel Advisor Tip: Portland is only 45 minutes away and a great day trip.
L is for Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
Crystal clear water surrounded by mountains makes Lake Tahoe stunning in every season.
Summer brings boating and hiking, while winter transforms the area into a snow lover’s paradise.
Can’t miss: A scenic cruise across the lake.
M is for Mackinac Island, Michigan
Life moves a little slower on Mackinac Island.
Experience a step back in time while relaxing on the longest front porch in the world at the Grand Hotel, take in the scenic trails at Mackinac Island State Park and discover 18th century history while on a guided tour of Fort Mackinac.
Can’t miss: Visit the Grand Hotel, enjoy whitefish dip, and fudge...try lots of delicious fudge.
Travel Advisor Tip: Motor vehicles are not allowed on the island so modes of transportation are limited to: walking, horse drawn carriage (the local taxi system - call the taxi company to arrange pick up), or biking. You can bring your own bicycle over on the ferry (for a fee) or rent one once you're on the island.
N is for Niagara Falls, New York
The roar of Niagara Falls is something you’ll never forget.
Seeing millions of gallons of water rush over the falls every minute is both humbling and exhilarating.

Can’t miss: The Maid of the Mist boat tour.
Travel Advisor Tip: Seeing the Falls from both the US and Canadian sides is absolutely worth it (the Canadian side has Horseshoe Falls, which is the largest section, and also offers exceptional panoramic views), but you will need a valid passport or an approved alternative to see the Falls from Canada as you do have to clear customs and immigration.
O is for Orlando, Florida
Few destinations offer as much variety as Orlando.
From world class theme parks to incredible dining and entertainment, there’s something for every age and travel style.
Can’t miss: Walt Disney World (4 parks, 2 water parks, multiple resorts and a dining, shopping, entertainment district) and Universal Orlando (3 parks, 1 water park, multiple resorts and a dining, shopping, entertainment district) are the two biggest reasons so many people visit Orlando.
Travel Advisor Tip: Build in rest days. There is so much to see that pacing your vacation makes all the difference. Orlando vacations are never one size fits all. Choosing the right resort and park strategy can completely change your experience, and as a travel agent, Orlando just so happens to be one of my specialties.
P is for Pike Place Market, Seattle, Washington
Pike Place Market is a must see when you're in Seattle.
This historic market is famous for flying fish, local artisans and the original Starbucks.
Can’t miss: While the fish throwing you may have seen videos of doesn't happen on a regular schedule, going during peak market times of 10am-3pm will give you a better chance of catching the "show", especially during cruising season of May-September.
Travel Advisor Tip: Many cruises to Alaska depart from Seattle. It is well worth arriving a couple of days early to explore the city and surrounding areas.
Q is for Quintessential New England
Sometimes the best destination isn’t a single place.
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine:
A New England road trip in the fall offers charming villages, covered bridges, lobster shacks, colorful foliage, and scenic coastal drives that are unforgettable.
Left to Right: Mystic (Connecticut) Aquarium, Institute for Exploration; Vanderbilt Estate, Newport, Rhode Island; Horseback riding in Stowe, Vermont; the Charles River, looking at the Boston skyline.
Can’t miss: Take the scenic route instead of the fastest one.
R is for Route 66
Sometimes the journey really is the destination.
Route 66 captures the spirit of classic American road trips with quirky roadside attractions, diners, vintage motels, and unforgettable scenery.
Can’t miss: Stop often. The unexpected discoveries become the best memories.

S is for Savannah, Georgia
Savannah is equal parts elegant and relaxed.
Its beautiful squares, moss draped oak trees, and historic architecture invite you to slow down and simply enjoy being there.
Can’t miss: Spend an afternoon wandering without an itinerary.
T is for Times Square, New York
Love it or hate it, everyone should experience Times Square at least once, just maybe not for New Year's Eve.

The lights, the crowds, the energy, and the excitement create one of the most recognizable intersections in the world.
Can’t miss: Visit after dark. See a Broadway show.
Travel Advisor Tip: Times Square is just one iconic part of New York City. The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Central Park, the 9/11 Memorial, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, are all also must see locations. A Broadway show, Chelsea Market, shopping on 5th Avenue, are must do experiences. Want to feel like a real New Yorker? Walk and/or use the train (subway).
U is for the U.S. Virgin Islands
White sand beaches, turquoise water, and laid back island life make the U.S. Virgin Islands an unforgettable escape.
Even better, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit.
Can’t miss: Snorkel at Trunk Bay on St. John.
V is for Vermont

If you’ve ever dreamed of peak fall foliage, Vermont delivers.
Covered bridges, country roads, charming villages, and vibrant autumn colors create a picture perfect getaway.
Can’t miss: Take a scenic drive through the Green Mountains. Stop at the Ben & Jerry's factory.
W is for Washington, D.C.

Our nation’s capital is filled with monuments, museums, and stories that shaped America.
Many of its best attractions are completely free, making it one of the country’s best values for travelers.
Can’t miss: Spend a day exploring the National Mall and Smithsonian museums. My favorites are the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum (they're free to visit!).
Travel Advisor Tip: March - Visiting the White House takes planning and a request to Congress months in advance. May is peak visiting season because of the Cherry Blossom Festival. It is also one of the busiest times to visit. For lower crowds, visit in the Fall. Visit the monuments at night for a special view with lower crowds.
X Marks the Spot
Every traveler deserves their own hidden gem.
Maybe it’s a tiny coastal town, a quiet mountain retreat, or an unexpected restaurant you’ll still be talking about years later.
Some of the best travel memories happen when you wander just a little off the beaten path.
Left to Right: Crawfish, Beignets and Chicory Coffee, Muffuletta sandwhich from New Orleans; Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina.
My favorite trips so far: Maine, the Biltmore Estate during Christmastime, and the food in New Orleans.
Still on my bucket list: Alaska and Hawaii!
Y is for Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite has inspired artists, photographers, and adventurers for generations.
Towering granite cliffs, giant sequoias, and spectacular waterfalls create one of America’s most iconic landscapes.
Can’t miss: Stop at Tunnel View before exploring the valley.
Z is for Zion National Park, Utah
Zion is dramatic from the moment you arrive.
Its soaring canyon walls and winding rivers create scenery that feels almost impossible to describe.
Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply want to soak in the views, Zion is unforgettable.
Can’t miss: Hike The Narrows or enjoy the scenic drive through the park.
